By Staff reporter

GUWAHATI, July 22 The All Bodo Students Union (ABSU) and the Bodo Sahitya Sabha (BSS) on Saturday alleged that Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has totally failed to play his role as the Home Minister of the State and that the State Government has failed to take any effective steps to maintain law and order in the Boroland Territorial Council (BTC) area so far.

The BTC area has witnessed acts of violence since July 6, which later took an ethnic turn and 13 persons have been killed in Kokrajhar district since Friday evening.

Commenting on the incidents, ABSU president Promode Boro told The Assam Tribune that the Chief Minister, who also holds the Home portfolio, failed to play his role. He demanded that the Chief Minister should make it public what steps he took for improvement of the law and order situation in BTC area. He also asked the Chief Minister to rush to Kokrajhar to take stock of the situation on the ground and direct the police to take effective steps to bring the situation under control.

Boro said that though acts of violence were taking place in Kokrajhar since July 6, police failed to nab the culprits and even to announce the names of the culprits, which led to the deterioration of the situation. He appealed to all sections of people to maintain peace and demanded that strict action should be taken against anyone found to be involved in such clashes.

On the other hand, the BSS said that Tarun Gogoi failed to play his role as the Home Minister and he should immediately appoint a separate Minister to run the Home Department

The BSS, in a release here, said that the State Government totally failed to take any effective steps for maintaining law and order in the BTC area and sought the intervention of the Union Home Minister to bring the situation under control. The Sabha said that a section of unscrupulous people are trying to create divisions among the people of BTC area and the police failed to nab the culprits.

The State unit of the Communist Party of India also expressed concern over the deterioration of the situation in BTC area and called upon all sections of people to maintain peace. The party also demanded that the Government should take immediate steps to bring the culprits to book.
