ABSU against ST status to six communities

By Spl Correspondent

NEW DELHI, Nov 13 - The All Bodo Students Union (ABSU) has misgivings over the Centres move to accord Schedule Tribe Status to the six communities in Assam.

ABSU president Promod Boro told newsmen that he wont support the demand to accord ST status to the six communities. Our position is that under the current situation we cannot support the demand, he said.

I am not going to oppose it, nor am I going to support it, he reiterated.

The ABSU leaders view is similar to leaders of other tribal groups in Assam. Boros reaction also comes at a time when the Centre has fast-tracked the issue and currently the proposal is pending clearance in the Prime Ministers Office.

Meanwhile, ABSU under the aegis of the National Federation for New States is staging a two-day demonstration at Jantar Mantar here demanding creation of a separate State of Bodoland.

Meanwhile, alleging discrimination, the ABSU president said that the Assam Government is not giving protection to the Bodo people, but on the contrary protecting the illegal Bangladeshi migrants.
