GUWAHATI, Oct 4 After being on the run for nearly four weeks, rape accused AIUDF legislator Gopinath Das was finally arrested from Hajo Chowk this afternoon by a team led by Kamrup Superintendent of Police, Indrani Baruah.

Das pre-arrest bail application was rejected by the Gauhati High Court on October 1, making his arrest imminent.

The controversial AIUDF MLA, charged of raping his 14-year-old domestic help, has been booked under Section 4/8 of the POCSO Act, 2012. Another case was registered under Section 447/506/355/384/420/120B of the IPC for allegedly forcing the victim girls parents to file an affidavit in his favour.

Kamrup SP Indrani Baruah informed that a team of police officials was following the movement of the accused based on specific information.

We were shadowing his movement. The accused was arrested while he was on the move, Baruah said.

Police sources informed that two more persons were picked up along with Gopinath Das and are being questioned in the Palasbari Police Station. Already, police has made a number of arrests, including some of the relatives of the legislator, in connection with the case. Police said that Das, in a bid to evade arrest, had even travelled outside the State.
