Abductee killed after ransom payment

By Biplab Kr Dey

TURA, Sept 7 - One Ismail Hoque Ali, a 22 year-old mason was abducted and later killed despite the payment of a ransom of Rs 4 lakh by the family of the victim. Ali, killed on September 3, was a resident of Mankachar in Assam.

His body was brought to Mankachar on Friday but angry residents refused to bury the body of the victim and it was only after the intervention of the local MLA that the body was buried.

Yesterday, a mob blocked the road coming from Mankachar and Hallidayganj. Meanwhile, an inter-State gang is believed to be involved in the abduction and murder. According to sources, his kidnappers had kept a watch on Alis house.

The murder appears to be the handiwork of someone who knew the family. When the family pleaded that they were poor and could not afford the money demanded, the callers over phone pointed to his auto rickshaw, cows and motor cycle and demanded the money be arranged, according to a source.

According to the family, Ali was kidnapped on August 28 and the ransom money of Rs 4 lakh was handed over on September 3. Alis body was recovered the next day.

They initially demanded Rs 50 lakh but we said we could only give about Rs 50.000 but they pointed to properties as well as the fact that there were five motorcycles in front of our house. We were shocked that the kidnappers were watching us, said a family member.

The family was asked to come to Tura on September 2 after an amount of Rs 4 lakh was fixed. A family member was asked to come to Tura Bazar and then to Don Bosco Centre. Again he was asked to reach Tura Super Market but no one came. He was later asked to stay in Tura for the night, said the source.

Next morning he was asked to go towards Damalgre where he handed over the money to two persons who came in a car, the source added.

Police stated that Alis hands and feet were bound and he was strangled after cotton was stuffed into his mouth.
