JORHAT, June 18 � Expressing concern over the absence of specified documents among majority of the tea garden workers and Adivasi population to submit with their forms for the National Registrar of Citizens (NRC) update process, several organisations including the Assam Tea Tribes Students Association (ATTSA) here today said that about 90 per cent of their people faced problems in the NRC update process as they have no valid documents like land and tenancy records, birth certificates, LIC certificate or others in the State.
According to ATTSA�s assistant general secretary Dhiraj Gowala about 90 per cent of the total 80 lakh population of the State tea garden workers have no such documents which were mentioned to be valid for submission during the process.
�As the absence of documents have caused problems for our people, we appealed the Governor and the Chief Minister to take initiatives for a solution. Yesterday, a discussion was held with the All Adivasi Students Association, ACMS, Adivasi Jatiya Sangha, Adivasi National Convention Committee and Birsa Commando Force as it appeared to be a serious problem for our people,� said Dhiraj Gowala.
He said that a discussion will be held in Guwahati on June 23 for finding out a solution to the problem. As the NRC update procedures have been conducted under the direction of the Supreme Court, the AATSA leader said they will have to appeal the Apex Court to specify some other alternative documents for the tea garden workers and the Adivasi population in Assam.
