AASU, TMPK stage satyagraha against mega dams

TEZPUR, July 11 � Registering strong protest against the proposals to set up mega dam projects on the Himalayan range � a seismically sensitive area � the all Assam Students� Union (AASU) and Takam Missing Porin Kebang (TMPK) today staged a satyagraha here at Tezpur.

The satyagraha programme saw participation of more than 5,000 people from Dhemaji and Lakhimpur districts.

The satyagrahis also opposed the move to bring back the turbines meant for the Lower Subansiri Hydro Electric Power Project (LSHEP).

Members of the AASU and TMPK gathered here at the historic Jaimoti Pothar at around 11.00 am and marched to the DC Office amidst tight security and held a public meeting in front of the DC Office here, which was addressed by AASU and TMPK leaders, among others.

The speakers at the meeting urged the Central government and the NHPC authority to cancel all the proposals of construction of the mega dams in the light of the observation made by the experts of IIT-Guwahati, GU and DU against construction of any mega dam on the seismically sensitive areas. Expressing strong resentment over the government�s anti-people activity, AASU and TMPK activists said that the State government and the Center as well have failed to implement the above mentioned recommendation of experts on the issue.

They also opposed the decision of the government to engage some other experts to re-examine the issue.

The student organizations submitted a memorandum to Deputy Commissioner Tapan Sharma that was addressed to the Prime Minister with a copy to the Chief minister demanding cancellation of construction of all the mega dam projects and initiating micro dam projects to meet the power demands of thee region.

The two organizations also demanded of the government to give top priority to the State�s flood and erosion problem by according them national status and find out a permanent solution to the real problems.
