AASU stages stir on various demands

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, March 24 Members of the All Assam Students' Union (AASU) today resorted to the Satyagraha form of agitation in support of their demands for reserving 100 per cent seats in the local self-governing bodies, legislature and Parliament for the indigenous people of the State and constitutional safeguard to these people.

The AASU members staged Satyagraha at the district headquarters and submitted memorandums to the Government of Assam and the President of India on the above issues.

In a statement here this evening, the student body said that constitutional safeguard to the indigenous people of the State is a must and there cannot be any compromise on the issue of authority of the indigenous people in Assam.

The unabated influx of Bangla migrants has posed a serious threat to the existence of the indigenous people of the State in their own land. The Bangla migrants have been encroaching upon the tribal belts and blocks, forest areas, tilling fields etc. This has upset the demographic pattern of the State. Some of the illegal Bangla migrants have also been taking part in the elections even as candidates, it alleged.

In such a situation, the indigenous peoples of the State should get constitutional safeguard, the AASU demanded.

The students body also pleaded for introduction of inner line permit system for the outsiders entering the State.
