JORHAT, Jan 29 - AASU activists burnt effigies of Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and State unit BJP president Ranjit Dass at AT Road in front of the Jorhat Deputy Commissioners office here on Monday.

AASU members shouting slogans against Sonowal and Dass, were protesting against the attack on AASU members on Sunday and tearing of the AASU flag reportedly by BJP supporters on Sunday.

AASU and BJP activists clashed in Ghograpar in Nalbari district in Lower Assam on Sunday when AASU members holding their organisations flags along with black flags staged a protest while Chief Minister and Health and Family Welfare Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma were on their way to attend an official function.

Some AASU activists were reportedly injured in the incident and an AASU flag was allegedly stamped upon during the melee.

AASU Assistant General Secretary Bijoy Shankar Bordoloi said that the protest was organised against Dass and Sonowal because the former is the head of the saffron party in Assam and latter is the head of the Government and also in charge of the Home Department.

Bordoloi said that the student body demanded legal action against the persons who had attacked AASU members and warned the saffron party not to repeat such incidents as the student body will respond strongly to any attempt to intimidate the student body. AASU State Organising Committee Jul Khound also took part in the protest.

Congress protest: Meanwhile, a sit-in demonstration was staged by Congress members in front of the Jorhat district Congress party office here against Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016.

The protest organised by Legal Department of Jorhat district Congress had AICC secretary and former Jorhat MLA Rana Goswami and Jorhat district unit Congress party president Dip Gogoi, a former Lok Sabha MP, among the protesters.
