DIBRUGARH, Sept 22 - The city here witnessed a massive satyagraha today by several thousands of students and other youths over the controversial notification of the Narendra Modi-led government on accommodating Hindu foreigners who entered India due to so called religious persecution in their own countries.
The satyagraha organised by the All Assam Students Union (AASU) was supported by several other ethnic and women organisations too.
Thousands of students turned up from several parts of the district particularly from schools and colleges. Scores of students from Dibrugarh University also joined the protest march as part of the satyagraha. The protest march was flagged off from the Old Government Boys School playground. The march was led by AASU general secretary Lurinjyoti Gogoi and other AASU leaders.
The students marched to Chowkidinghee ground via Marwaripatty-HS Road-Thana Chariali and Mancotta Road. The protesters raised anti-BJP and anti-Congress slogans during the procession. The students particularly condemned the silence of Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal (he was a former AASU president) and other BJP MPs on the issue. The traffic on the procession route came to a standstill for about two hours. The procession concluded at the Chowkidinghee ground. The huge mass of students roared Sarbananda murdabad, Prasanta Phukan murdabad, Siddhartha Bhattacharyya murdabad, Tarun Gogoi murdabad, Narendra Modi murdabad throughout the four kilometre march, drawing the attention of all en route.
The AASU leaders and several other ethnic organisation leaders voiced their protest against the notification of the Government of India on providing shelter to the Hindu foreigners. The leaders said that they will never allow foreigners to be settled in the State on the basis of religion, urging upon the BJP government that another Assam agitation must not be provoked.
Condemning the BJP government for playing politics on the basis of religion, Lurinjyoti Gogoi said that AASU will not allow politics in the State on the basis of religion. He called upon the BJP MPs to persuade the Central government to withdraw the notification.
