AASU stages dharna against big dams

By Correspondent

TINSUKIA, Oct 25 To protest against the Arunachal Pradesh Governments move in not involving the people of Assam in the public hearing regarding setting up of a big dam on the Dibang river which would affect the people of upper Assam, especially the Sadiya subdivision the All Assam Students Union (AASU) staged a satyagraha at Chapakhowa public field on October 24 last.

Speaking on the occasion, leaders of different organizations, namely, All Assam Moran Students Union, Sadiya Makum Surakhya Samity, Tai Ahom Yuba Parishad, All Assam Mising Students Union, Gorkha Students Union, Anti-dam Committee of Arunachal Pradesh etc. expressed concern over the matter.

They said that the big dam that would produce 3000 Mega Watt power would be dangerous to the people in the downstream areas and the concerned authorities have made a big blunder by not taking the opinion of the people.

Attending the satyagraha, Tapan Gogoi, the general secretary of AASU stated that AASU was not against development but it was opposed to the project that would bring danger to the life and property of many people.

He added that the government should go for setting up of small dams instead of big ones. The satyagraha was preceded by a big rally and participated by thousands of people from different walks of life.
