NORTH LAKHIMPUR, June 18 The Lakhimpur district AASU staged a sit-in strike across several places on Monday to protest the indifferent attitude of the government towards the worsening flood and erosion problems in the district.
In the district headquarters town, the North Lakhimpur unit of the AASU staged the sit-in strike and demonstration inside the compound of the Office of Water Resources, Lakhimpur Circle, demanding immediate action on the erosion of the Na Ali-Bhimpora embankment on the right hand side of the river Subansiri at Khoga.
Speaking on the occasion, the president of North Lakhimpur AASU, Jadumani Baruah and its secretary in-charge Nipu Kumar Das said that though the embankment had been eroded to a large extent in the previous years, the Water Resources department took no remedial measures forcing the student body to take the demonstration programmes.
The sit-in strike was also attended by Krishna Das, state executive member of the AASU and Devajeet Mazumdar, an ex-state executive member of the AASU.
Similar sit-in demonstrations were also conducted at Nowboicha, Banderdewa, Ghilamora, Dhakuakhana and Mornoi-Bebejia.
