AASU resumes stir against Subansiri dam

GUWAHATI, July 5 � The All Assam Students� Union (AASU) today announced resumption of its agitation in protest against the attempt at carrying the turbines to the Gerukamukh site of the Lower Subansiri Hydroelectric Power Project (LSHEP).

The AASU said in a statement here said that its Tezpur local unit initiated an instant protest programme on July 4 in protest against the bid of the authorities to carry the turbines to Gerukamukh.

The AASU members will take recourse to a human chain on July 6 at Tezpur in protest against this bid of the authorities. Soon, this will be followed by other protest programmes, said the AASU in its statement.

The experts of IIT, Guwahati, Gauhati University and Dibrugarh University had recommended in their report that the construction activities of the LSHEP should be kept in abeyance and this recommendation of the experts should be honoured by the State as well as the Central Government, demanded the AASU.

It has also reiterated the demand for recognizing flood and erosion in the State as national problems in an expeditious manner.
