AASU relief for ethnic clash victims

GUWAHATI, Jan 13 � The All Assam Students� Union (AASU) today distributed 25 mini truckloads of relief materials among the victims of the ethnic clashes in the Assam-Meghalaya border areas. The materials were distributed in the relief camps of both the ethnic groups located in Goalpara district.

The students� body also criticized the Government for its failure to distribute adequate relief materials among the affected people. The inmates of the relief camps set up to shelter the people affected by the ethnic clashes are still suffering from the lack of many essential items like clothes and blankets, said the students� body.

The students� body said in a statement here that the consignment distributed among the affected people constitutes the first instalment of the relief materials it has planned for these people. The relief materials collected from the people included 25,00 pieces of blankets, a good quantity of baby food, clothes for the women, wollens, biscuits, wax candles, etc. The AASU team was led by its advisor Samujjal Bhattacharyya.

Significantly, the AASU team coordinated with the All Rabha Students� Union (ARSU) and the Garo Students� Union (GSU). The All Goalpara District Students� Union and the Assam Unnati Sabha also teamed up with the AASU central executive committee in this respect.

The Marowari Yuva Mancha also extended full cooperation to the AASU in this regard. The leaders of the Mancha accompanied the AASU team to Goalpara. Besides, the representatives of the Assam Textile Merchants� Association and the Guwahati branch of the Marowari Sanmilan also visited the Goalpara relief camps, AASU said in its statement.

The students� body has set up its relief material collection centre at the Uzanbazar Swahid Nyas Bhawan here. It will distribute relief materials among the affected people again within a day or two and hence made an appeal to the people to donate liberally clothes for the children and women, baby food, woollens, etc.
