AASU ready for debate with Modi

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Dec 27 - Reacting to the State BJP leader Himanta Biswa Sarmas invitation for an open debate over the contentious issues of the State, including Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and NRC, All Assam Students Union chief advisor Samujjal Kumar Bhattacharya today said that AASU is ready for a debate on the issue with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Bhattacharyya added that even Union Home Minister Amit Shah and any other BJP leader, including Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal or State Cabinet minister Himanta Biswa Sarma can join the debate to which the students body would have no objection.

In view of the anti-CAA stir led by the All Assam Students Union across the State, the State Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had requested Bhattacharyya to join him for a debate in Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra on the issues of CAA, NRC and also on factual details of assurances given by the Union Home Minister Amit Shah during his recent discussion with the AASU leadership.

We are ready for the debate, provided Prime Minister Narendra Modi come down for the same. He, however, can take along Union Home Minister or the State BJP leaders like Sarbananda Sonowal or Himanta Biswa Sarma. The level of debate over the issue of such magnitude should not be scaled down for the greater interest of the people of Assam, he mentioned.

When the AASU leadership raised all these issues with facts and figures during the meeting with Amit Shah, both Sarbananda Sonowal and Himanta Biswa Sarma were present.

But, none of them had an answer to our points back then. If a public debate has to happen now, it must be in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. People of Assam have a number questions for which they want an answer from the Prime Minister, he added.
