AASU protest against Centres move

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Oct 18 - Members of the All Assam Students Union (AASU) today took out torchlight processions at the district and subdivisional headquarters of the State in protest against the alleged move of the Central Government to amend the Citizenship Act to provide citizenship rights to the post-March 25, 1971 Hindu Bangla migrants and to settle them in the State.

The students body said in a statement here this evening that this move if allowed to be fructified, will marginalize the indigenous peoples of Assam in their native land and the AASU is determined to frustrate this move.

The students body said that the people of Assam undertook the burden of the illegal migrants who entered the State till March 25, 1971 irrespective of the religious affiliation of those migrants.

But now, the Central Government led by Narendra Modi as the Prime Minister has conspired to impose the post-1971 Hindu Bangla migrants on Assam taking a totally anti-Assam stand. This is posing a serious threat to the existence of the indigenous people of the State. The AASU is determined to intensify its agitation against this conspiracy. The AASU has been continuing dialogue with the organisations of all the ethnic groups of the State on this issue, said the students body.

In the city, AASU office-bearers including its advisor Samujjal Bhattacharyya, president Dipanka Kumar Nath, information secretary Prakash Das, office secretary Dharmeswar Das, among others, took part in the procession.

The Central Governments move to amend the Citizenship Act has been strongly opposed by several political parties and organisations in the State.
