JORABAT, Aug 16 - On completion of 34 years of the historic Assam Accord which was signed on August 15, 1985, the Kamrup (Metro) district unit of the All Assam Students� Union (AASU) and its allied units paid tributes to the 855 martyrs of the Assam Movement, at functions held in Guwahati and nearby areas on Thursday evening.
Earthen lamps to pay tributes to the martyrs were lit by the Kamrup (Metro) unit of AASU at the Gauhati University�s AASU office, at the Bhupen Hazarika Garden in Sonapur by the Dimoria regional unit, at the Chandmari Swahid Garden by the All Gauhati Students� Union and at the Chandrapur AASU office. The programmes were initiated by Kamrup (Metro) district AASU president Kusha Rongpi and general secretary Dibyajyoti Medhi.
Talking to this correspondent, Medhi said the AASU would continue to fight for total implementation of the Assam Accord. �Many of the main clauses, including the sealing of the Indo-Bangladesh border, detection and deportation of illegal migrants and deletion of their names from the voters� list, constitutional and economic safeguard for the indigenous people of Assam, protection of land in tribal belts, satras and several other provisions still await implementation,� he said.
Medhi exhorted Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal to implement the clauses of the Assam Accord and honour the sacrifice of the martyrs.
He said that Sonowal, as a leader of the AASU, had fought for the implementation of the Accord. But unfortunately, after becoming the Chief Minister, he does not seem interested in the issue. �We urge the Chief Minister to justify his statements made while he was an AASU leader,� Medhi added.
