AASU meet begins at Duliajan

DULIAJAN, Nov 18 - Hinting at handing over leadership of the State�s largest student organisation to young members, AASU general secretary Lurinjyoti Gogoi joined the 17th conference of the student body that has begun at Duliajan Salakataki public playground here today.

Speaking to this correspondent, Gogoi said the next committee of the All Assam Students� Union will be �energetic and active�. He said the Duliajan conference will pave the way for a �new AASU with new spirit and energy�.

The AASU is all set for reforms with more control of the organisation at the hands of young student members, he said, adding, �we will also chalk out a practical strategy to unite the student fraternity of the State.�

Echoing the same view, AASU central committee executive member Udiptajyoti Gogoi said �we will continue our struggle and effort to unite the student fraternity of the State for more active anti-CAA movement in the days to come.�

He said the student fraternity has put their opinions in favour of a new political party that will propagate �real regionalism� in the state. �To establish a collective power for regionalism, we have to grow a collective student power in the future,� he added.

Accepting the significance of a new political power in the State, Udiptajyoti said a detailed discussion on the topic has been marked on the agenda of the conference that will be attended by top leaders of the student body.

AASU president Dipanka Kumar Nath has also arrived here for the conference and he thanked the people of Duliajan for their hospitality. Around ten thousand representatives of AASU from every part of the State will assemble at Duliajan for the conference.

Earlier, the four-day conference began with a cleanliness drive at 9 am, followed by inauguration of a gate modelled on the Jyoti Batsora of Dibrugarh University. Duliajan College principal Dr Lokbikash Gogoi inaugurated the gate.

At 11 am the main entrance gate was inaugurated by the former and first principal of Duliajan College, Purnakanta Hazarika. Following that the Swahid memorial stage and pandal was inaugurated by Dr Surendra Nath Gogoi.

The other programmes of the day saw inauguration of a memorial exhibition, a book fair, an office-bearers camp, etc.

The central executive meeting will be held later tonight at the Duliajan Bokuloni Neepco residential area.
