GUWAHATI, Feb 12 In an attempt to help out the meritorious students hailing from economically weak families, the All Assam Students Union (AASU) today launched its ambitious Statewide scholarship project.

Initiated by the Education Cell of the students body, the scholarship would be given to 1,150 students for this year.

Speaking at a programme organized for awarding scholarship for the meritorious students of Kamrup (Metro) district, Amarjyoti Choudhury, Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the Tezpur University said that this noble attempt of the students union would go a long way in helping the students.

Every society has a dream that its members should get equal opportunity to get education, but unfortunately, many of the meritorious students are deprived of the opportunity to get higher education due to lack of money, he said.

He further said that it is the responsibility of the students, getting the scholarships, to pay back to the society by helping other students, when they grow up and establish themselves in the society.

Speaking on the occasion Samujjal Kr Bhattacharyya, AASU adviser, said that the members of the students unions regional-level branches have contributed to formation of this education cell and with the help of some educationists and corporate houses, it has been possible to award this scholarship to the students.

Basanta Deka, president of the education cell said that education for all is a must to build a strong society and everyone should contribute to make this education cell stronger.

To be eligible for the scholarship, the families of the students should be economically weak rendering them unable to bear the cost of education. Though the meritorious students studying in any class can apply for it, the HSLC and HSSLC students will get preference. The students getting 80 per cent and above marks get a scholarship of Rs 4,000, those who get 70-80 per cent marks get Rs 3,000 and students getting 60-70 per cent marks get Rs 2,000 as scholarship. In addition, four meritorious students who have taken admission for engineering course would get Rs 25,000 as one- time educational aid. Moreover, among the applicants, those who have topped the HSLC and the HSSLC would get the scholarship of Rs 10,000. The process of awarding the scholarships to the students across the State would be completed by February 15.
