AASU-Govt talks on NRC update

By STAFF Reporter

GUWAHATI, May 16 A delegation of All Assam Students Union (AASU) led by its advisor Samujjal Bhattacharyya today had a discussion with the Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and discussed issues of NRC update in the State. AASU asked the State Government to complete the work ahead of coming Lok Sabha election in 2014.

Stressing the need of starting NRC update work in the entire State simultaneously on a war footing, the students body said that there should not be any further delay in starting the work.

The deliberations were held in a cordial atmosphere and both the AASU and the Government agreed that Government of India and Registrar General of India should start the NRC update work immediately.

During the discussion the State Government accepted in principle that the process of NRC update be taken up throughout the State if approved from the Government of India. Objecting on the preparation of modalities by Government of Assam for NRC update without consulting the students body, AASU members put thrust on the need of an additional affidavit in the Supreme Court of India by the State Government to fill the lacunae in the draft modalities.

The meeting decided to consider the suggestions of AASU to be submitted on the draft modalities prepared, based on the recommendations of the Cabinet Sub- Committee and presently under consideration of Government of India.

The AASU delegation also underscored the need for a tripartite discussion on implementation of Assam Accord at the Prime Ministers level. The Chief Minister assured that he would take up the matter with the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. The last tripartite talk at the Prime Ministers level was held on May 5, 2005.
