AASU-DU standoff over admission continues

By STAFF Correspondent

DIBRUGARH, June 13 Admission to any of the professional courses in Dibrugarh University (DU) by attaining high percentage in degree examinations is a distant dream now, given the new rule of the varsity to hold entrance examinations to various courses for admissions. This new rule has been criticised by the student community, particularly those intending to pursue courses in the varsity.

Questioning the logic of holding entrance examination for admissions to various courses in Dibrugarh University, All Assam Students Union (AASU) has sought cancellation of the new rule, stating that the step would only devalue the degree examinations held under the varsity. So far, percentage in the degree examinations was taken into consideration for admission to Dibrugarh University.

AASU held marathon discussion on the matter with the varsity authorities, college teachers body and college principals body at varsity yesterday evening but failed to come to a conclusion. Dibrugarh University authorities reportedly stood firm on their new rule but AASU leadership led by its advisor Dr Samujjal Bhattacharyya oposed the rule.

The meeting, which failed to reach to any conclusion proposed another sitting on June 19 to further discuss the issue.
