AASU demands immediate talks among experts

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Jan 19 The All Assam Students Union has demanded immediate discussions among the experts of the State and those from other parts of the country and abroad on the feasibility of the Lower Subansiri Hydro Electric Project (LSHEP).

The process of this discussion should be completed within 100 days or so. Till its completion, the construction of the LSHEP should be kept in abeyance, said the students body in a statement here.

Reacting to the assertions made by the National Hydro Electric Power Corporation (NHPC) on the observations of the States experts on the LSHEP, the AASU said that the power company has resorted to falsehood and demanded suspension of construction activities and transportation of construction materials to Gerukamukh, the site of the project.

The NHPC and Assam Government are connected with the decision for formation of the States expert group, which went into the LSHEP and this committee had in its February 10, 2009 interim report, called for suspension of construction activities at Gerukamukh. The House Committee set up by the Assam Legislative Assembly also echoed the same view in its interim report. The Government and the NHPC are against the States expert committee report because it has not toed their lines. Significantly, the NHPC is silent on the report of the Assembly committee, which has approved the recommendations made by the expert committee.

It has warned that its members, along with the members of 26 ethnic organisations have been keeping strict vigil at Naoboicha in Lakhimpur district and at Gogamukh in Dhemaji district on the transportation of construction materials to the project site.
