GUWAHATI, July 4 � All Assam Students� Union (AASU) today demanded inclusion of the provision for double track broad gauge railway for Assam and other benefits for the State in the ensuing Railway Budget. The students� body has sent a demand charter to the Union Railway Minister Sadananda Gauda listing its demands.
In a statement here, it said Assam is a major State of the country which is deprived of double track broad gauge rail lines. The new government at the Centre should make the provision for double track broad gauge rail lines up to Dibrugarh. This is obligatory for improvement in the communication system of the State and also for its economic development, said the students� body.
It also demanded recruitment of only the job seekers of Assam and North East against all the vacancies occurring in the �C� and �D� category posts of the NF Railway, introduction of electric trains in Assam, demarcation of the boundary of the NF Railway, immediate steps to set up a rail coach factory at Bongaigaon, establishment of the allied industries required for the Indian Railways in Assam, completion of the bridge over the Brahmaputra at Bogibeel on a war footing, construction of another railway bridge over the Brahmaputra at Saraighat, completion of the expansion of the broad gauge rail link between Guwahati and Barak Valley and Rangiya and Murkakcheleng on a war footing, linking Assam with the metropolises in other parts of the country through super fast trains, introduction of a super fast long distance train in the name of Lakshminath Bezbaroa and a cultural train in the name of Bhupen Hazarika, among others.
