AASU decries Singhs nomination

By STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI, Jan 28 The Congress action of nominating Sanjay Singh as one of its candidates for the Rajya Sabha elections is an insult to the people of Assam, said adviser to the All Assam Students Union (AASU), Samujjal Bhattacharya.

Bhattacharya strongly criticised the nomination of Singh, who hails from Amethi in Uttar Pradesh, by the ruling party and said that the Congress decision was shocking. He said Assam should not be allowed to be a dumping ground for politicians from other parts of the country. He pointed out that the AASU has been demanding that all the seats in the Parliament, Assembly and local bodies be kept reserved for the indigenous people of the State.

The AASU adviser described Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and other leaders of the Congress in Assam as spineless persons, who always kneel down before the diktats of the leaders in Delhi without considering the interests of Assam and its people. He said that the people of Assam would never accept Sanjay Singh as a Member of Parliament from the State.

Dr Manmohan Singh, who started his political career as a Rajya Sabha member from Assam and went on to become Prime Minister of the country, never took any initiative to solve the burning problems of the State, including the problem of infiltration of foreigners and flood and erosion and there is no chance of Sanjay Singh doing something worthwhile for the State, the AASU adviser said.
