AASU criticises Govt for inaction

By STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI, March 23 Members of All Assam Students Union (AASU) and local rubber planters blocked the National Highway at Solmari in Goalpara district today in protest against the indifference shown by Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi towards the heinous act of destroying thousands of rubber plants allegedly by the illegal migrants in the district. This act has affected an economic movement initiated by the indigenous peoples of the district towards attaining self-dependence, said the students body.

The students body, in a statement here, said that its members and the rubber planters of the district today demanded stringent punishment to those involved in this monstrous act of derailing an economic movement of the indigenous people. They also demanded security to those involved in rubber plantation.

The students body claimed that over 15,000 families of the indigenous peoples of the district have planted rubber plants on around 10,000 bighas of land. These plantations have been preventing expansion of the settlements of the illegal migrants like natural stockades and hence the illegal migrants have made these plantations targets of their attack.

For the past about two months, the illegal migrants have been destroying rubber plantations in the district, but the Chief Minister, who has earned notoriety for his alleged atrocious activities against the indigenous peoples, has not been able to take any step against those involved in such shocking acts. For, he is more concerned in winning the votes of the illegal migrants, alleged the students body.

It alleged yesterday that on March 18, 1,200 rubber plants were felled by illegal migrants in Moriom Nagar area. This was preceded by axing of 2,000 rubber plants in Bapujinagar, Begulamari areas. On the same date, about 300 rubber plants were destroyed at Barjuli Kamarpara near Krishnai.

On February 25, 1,000 rubber plants were burnt down at Nalanga in Bamundanga area, it alleged.
