AASU activists stage road blockade in Dibrugarh

By Staff Correspondent

DIBRUGARH, May 16 - Several loaded trucks, tankers, passenger vehicles and even private cars remained stranded on the road for about two hours in the morning following blockade by members of the All Assam Students Union (AASU) near Dibrugarh University.

The students body blocked NH-37 in protest against arrest of some 25 AASU activists including its district general secretary Sankarjyoti Baruah and central executive member Udipjyoti Gogoi in Duliajan after the AASU members sought to stage protest against one Kavin Engineering and Services Private Limited engaged by Oil India Limited. It is learnt that AASU had placed certain demands before the Kavin Engineering and Services Private Limited but the Company reportedly ignored it.

Blockades were also staged near Convoy road intersection here and in Naharkatia. The students body called off their protest after district administration assured them of facilitating a meeting with OIL and Kavin Engineering and Services Private Limited. They also demanded unconditional release of the AASU workers.
