AASAA asked to mount pressure for ST status

DIBRUGARH, April 8 � The think tank of the All Adivasi Students� Association of Assam (AASAA) has asked the central and regional leaders of the Adivasi students� body to organise massive rallies in blocks and sub-divisions of each districts of the State to press for inclusion of Adivasis in the ST list, increase of wages in the tea gardens to Rs 100 and for formation of Adivasi Development Council.

All the blocks and regional bodies have been advised to organise rallies and submit memorandums by April 30 as part of the three tier agitational programme, according to a press communique.

The students body will also observe May Day to begin the second part of their agitation but with a difference. May Day observance will revolve around wage hike of the tea garden workers.

The main demand on the day would be hike of the wages of the workers in the tea garden to Rs. 100. Besides, sit-in demonstration will be organised in all district headquarters on May 10 and a road blockade is proposed for May 25.

The third phase of agitations would be in serious form. Although no specific information has been mentioned, AASAA has hinted in the communique that the third phase would involve serious forms of democratic agitations like 1000 hours rail-roko, highway blockade, hunger strike and do or die programmes.

However, after each programme, think tank of the AASAA would meet and decide the next course of action. They may also alter the programmes if situation so demanded, the communique stated.
