A school which is yet to receive Govt patronage

By Correspondent

LUMDING, Sept 9 Believe it or not, the teachers of Terelangchu High School located at a remote village of east Lumding along the border of Karbi Anglong, are drawing only a paltry sum of Rs 300 per month, authentic sources disclosed.

The school was established in 1985. It may be noted that Class-VIII to Class-X were opened in 2001, 2002 and 2003 respectively. The official permission for opening the high school was received in 2008. There are 17 teachers, while the total number of students is 200. The percentage of pass during the last HSLC examination was 84 percent.

The Sankardev High School of Dakhin Lumding was established 10 years after the establishment of Terelangchu High School, but it has been receiving financial aid regularly from the Govt of Assam.

It is also learnt that the earnings of the school from the students and other sources is not less than Rs one lakh per month, though the salary drawn by each teacher is only Rs 300 per month.

It is learnt from Kishore Sharma, a social activist, who officially sought the information vide RTI and wrote to the additional deputy commissioner, who in his turn issued a letter to the inspector of schools and the headmaster of the school with a copy to Kishore Sharma on July 9, 2014. But no answer has as yet been received.

The local MLA Swapan Kar (AIUDF), social activists and the general people here have expressed concern over the wretched condition of the school and urged the Govt to take urgent necessary steps so as to save the school and its teachers from imminent doom.
