9 shops burgled on same day Speaker launches CCTV system

JORHAT, Jan 31 - On the same day State Assembly Speaker Hitendra Nath Goswami inaugurated a CCTV surveillance system at the Jorhat Police Station, thieves on Tuesday night burgled nine shops in three areas and decamped with cash and several items.

A police source said the thieves first robbed six shops at Gar Ali near the Prince of Wales Institute of Engineering and Technology and then two more shops at the PWD Road beside Gar Ali, and another at Gar Ali near the PWD police point.

The shops that were burgled on Tuesday night sold hardware, mobile phones, computers and TVs. It may be mentioned here that on the night of January 22, nine shops were burgled at two different areas (Bongalpukhuri and Jail Road) of the town. Prior to that, seven shops were burgled in Tarajan area in the first half of January.

On January 29, Goswami had launched the �Project Third Eye�, under which 32 CCTV cameras were installed at prominent places of the town. The project, initiated with the support of the local business community, is aimed at curbing crimes by carrying out surveillance.
