89 pc votes cast in Manipur repoll

IMPHAL, March 9 - Over 89 per cent voters cast their votes in the repolling at 34 polling stations in three districts of Manipur on Thursday, according to State Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Vivek Kumar Dewangan.

The repoll was ordered following electoral malpractices during the first phase of Manipur Assembly elections on March 4. The repoll was held in 12 polling stations in Saikul, six in Thanlon, five each in Andro and Henglep, three in Saitu, one each in Saikot Uripok and Singhat, spread across eight Assembly constituencies in Imphal East,Imphal West, Kangpokpi and Churachandpur districts.

No unwanted incident was reported till the end of repoll at 3 pm, reports said.

Meanwhile, Election Commission of India on Thursday has ordered repolling at another 28 polling stations including 13 in Senapati district, eight in Ukhrul district, four in Chandel, one each in Kangpokpi, Tengnoupal and Kamjong districts following electoral malpractices during the last phase elections on Wednesday.

�The concerned Returning Officers have been directed to make arrangement for the repolls,� said CEO Dewangan in a press note. The repoll will be held from 7 am to 3 pm tomorrow.

The 86 per cent voter turnout in Wednesday�s polling in 22 Assembly constituencies is similar to that of first phase poll on March 4.

Meanwhile, preparations are on in the State for the counting of votes on March 11.

Blast: A day after eight persons were injured in a bomb explosion in Imphal town, another bomb exploded at Singjamei on Thursday afternoon. However, there is no report of any casualty in the explosion, reports said.

The incident took place near Super market complex at Singjamei on the Imphal-Moreh road around 5 pm.

On Wednesday, at least eight persons including three women were injured in a blast in front of Deva Pharmacy near Kasturi bridge in Thangal Bazaar in Imphal.

On Tuesday, one polling official injured in bomb attack in Kamjong district, succumbed to the injuries, sources also said.
