85 pc TB patients in Golaghat district cured

DERGAON, March 25 � The World TB Day was observed with a daylong programme at Dergaon CHC yesday. The day was observed as the central programme of Golaghat district in the hospital. The focal theme of this year is �Stop TB in my Life time, we want zero TB deaths�.

It is pertinent to mention that the TB Day has been organised since 1982 to commemorate the discovery of the bacteria that causes tuberculosis after a century which was discovered by Dr Robert Koch in 1882.

As a rapid infection of TB was reported in 1981 world wide, the day was declared to make the people aware against TB. Today�s programme included several awareness items like leaflet distribution, awareness meeting, etc. The meting held with Dr Anadar Neog, Deputy Superintendent of Dergaon CHC in the chair, was attended by a large gathering where patients, local residents, ASHA workers, doctors, employees were the prime participants.

The meeting was attended by Dr Mukul Chandra Gogoi, Joint Director of Health Services, Golaghat and Dr Robin Ch Nath, the in-charge of TB Control Committee of Golaghat as the resource persons. In his speech, the Joint Director Dr Gogoi revealed that a total of one-third TB patients of the world are in India only. Every 5000 people of the world are infected with TB and 1000 patients dieper day.

He urged the gathering to take timely treatment of TB. On the other hand, Dr Robin Ch Nath revealed that Golaght district started the TB Control Programme in July, 2007 and got the recognition of Target District of National Programme for consecutive three years. The District Society already detected the 70 pc of new patients and 85 pc of them were completely cured. They also revealed that a total of 11 centres are continuing free TB treatment in the district. The centres where free testing of sputum is done are Golaghat TB Centre, Merapani CHC, Kamarbandhaali PHC, Dergaon CHC, Bokakhat FRU, Sarupathar PHC, Naujan Mini PHC, Barpathar Mini PHC, Gelabeel Mini PHC, Marangi PHC and VK NRL Hospital.
