85 crorepatis in Nagaland poll fray

DIMAPUR, Feb 15 � Altogether 85 candidates out of the 188 candidates contesting the February 23 Nagaland Assembly polls have declared assets worth more than Rs 1 crore.

The party-wise break-up of these crorepati candidates are: ruling Naga People�s Front (NPF) � 40 , opposition Congress 25 , NCP 2 and 1 United Nagaland Democratic Party. Seventeen independent candidates are amongst the crorepatis in the fray.

The data was made available in the Nagaland Election Watch 2013 report conducted and released by independent body � Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) and YouthNet (YN).

Among the major political parties, the average asset per candidate for NPF is Rs 3.02 crore, Congress Rs 2.85 crore, NCP Rs 62.51 lakhs, BJP Rs 14.28 lakh and JD(U) Rs 42.57 lakh.

The analysis was made on the basis of the affidavits filed by the candidates in their nomination papers, informed ADR national coordinator Anil Bairwal and YN director Hekani Jakhalu in Kohima today.

Former Chief Minister and Congress candidate contesting from Dimapur I, KL Chishi, is the richest with movable assets worth Rs 44,43,027 and immovable assets worth Rs 49.75 lakh. He is followed by Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio with movable assets worth Rs 14.90 crore and immovable assets of Rs 16,20,000 totalling Rs 30.07 crore.

In the 2008 elections, out of the 218 candidates, there were only 58 crorepati candidates.

Twelve candidates out of the 188 have declared assets less than Rs 5 lakh. Candidates with assets below Rs 2 lakh are Lingko Sangtam from Seyochung Sitimi seat and Leiyang from Phomching seat, both BJP candidates, and Congress candidate Bongkhao.

Meanwhile, three candidates have declared criminal records, which include two from ruling NPF � Toshipokba of Aolengden and Neiba Kronu of Pfutsero and the third is independent candidate P Cheong from Mon town. Out of these three candidates with declared criminal cases, charges have been framed against Neiba Kronu with one charge related to criminal conspiracy.

The highest growth in assets during the last five years (2008-2013) is led by Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio with an increase of Rs 23.83 crores.
