GUWAHATI, Oct 6 - Maligaon-headquartered Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has created around 8.40 lakh additional berths to cater to passenger demands during the Durga Puja and Diwali holiday season and more are expected to be added in the run-up to Christmas and New Year holidays later in the year.

NFR Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) Pranav Jyoti Sharma told The Assam Tribune that a total of 8,39,096 additional berths have been created to clear rush of passengers from this region during the current festive season.

A total of 16 (special) trains have been planned to run during this year (2016-17) Durga Puja and Diwali season, Sharma said.

He added that of them, five are long distance inter-zonal trains and 11 are short distance intra-zonal trains.

The response has been very good. Such (special) trains are running almost full, said the NFR CPRO with regard to bookings by passengers so far.

Sharma said that last year 4,38,396 additional berths had been created during Durga Puja and Diwali holiday season and another 2,52,082 additional berths were created during Christmas and New Year holiday season, taking the overall total to 6,90,478 berths.

So this time we have already seen an increase of 1,48,618 additional berths so far, he added.

Sharma said that the long distance trains are running on charted or vacant path over NFR and other zonal railways, while the short distance trains are mostly being operated in newly-commissioned gauge converted sections and in the branch line sections. Therefore, there is no significant stress on line capacity.

Meanwhile, sources said that besides NFR, other zonal railways like Eastern Railway and South Eastern Railway are also running Puja special trains to and from the North Eastern region.
