82.20 pc final turnout in first phase polls

GUWAHATI, April 5 - The State witnessed a record voting of 82.20 per cent during yesterday�s first phase of polls which covered 65 Legislative Assembly Constituencies (LACs) in Barak Valley, Upper Assam, Hill districts and North Bank.

As per the final data released by the Election Commission today, the percentage of polling among male electorates stood at 81.84 per cent and among the female voters it stood at 82.58 per cent.

Naoboisa constituency recorded the highest turnout of 88.07 per cent among the 65 LACs, while the lowest turnout of 75.05 per cent was reported in Silchar.

Among other constituencies which recorded high turnouts are Biswanath (86.73 per cent), Khumtai (86.54 per cent), Sonari (86.38 per cent), Rangapara (86.05 per cent) and Behali (86.04 per cent).

Among those where turnout was comparatively low are Ratabari (75.92 per cent), Karimganj North (75.98 per cent), Lakhipur (76.05 per cent) and Hailakandi (77.80 per cent).

The high-profile Titabor LAC, where Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi is trying his luck for the fourth successive time, recorded a turnout of 83.42 per cent, while Majuli LAC, where BJP chief ministerial candidate Sarbananda Sonowal is contesting, recorded a turnout of 83.40 per cent.

Sources said that this is the highest-ever turnout in Assam. However, as polling is yet to be held in 61 LACs, which will be voting in the second phase on April 11, the final turnout figures for the entire State may change.
