80 in fray for Dibrugarh civic polls

DIBRUGARH, Jan 28 � Altogether 80 candidates are in the fray for the city�s 22 municipal wards at the end of submission of nomination papers for the ensuing municipal elections early this evening.

Elsewhere in the Dibrugarh district, 21 candidates have filed their nominations for the four Wards of Naharkatia, while for the four Wards of Chabua, 17 candidates have filed their nominations. For the eight Wards of Namrup, 30 candidates have filed their papers.

The nomination papers would be scrutinized on January 30, while February 2 is the last date for withdrawing from the fray. Elections would be held on February 9 while counting of votes would take place from February 12.

The BJP is trying to wrest the civic bodies from the Congress this time, in all the municipal towns of the district. However, the BJP in the city appears to be having a tough time battling unhappy contenders.
