7th Int�l Tourism Mart begins in Agartala

AGARTALA, Nov 22 - Northeastern region has immense potential in adventure tourism, eco tourism and religious tourism, said Union Tourism Minister KJ Alphons.

For long years, this part of the country was ignored but things have started falling in right way for the past few years with NE drawing more tourists, he said after inaugurating the 7th International Tourism Mart-2018 at Prajna Bhavan here on Thursday.

The Union Tourism Ministry has cleared as many as 50 projects amounting to Rs 1,300 crore to boost tourism in the region, he imnformed.

Branding the North East as most incredible part of the country, Alphons said tourism sector has been significantly contributing to the country�s GDP. �While tourism growth in the globe is seven per cent, India also registered seven per cent growth this year�, he said.

�Tripura is like God�s own paradise�.. 70 per cent of the State�s total geographical area is covered under forests, and Unakoti, Tripureswari temple and Chhabimura � all have made the State incredible�, he observed.

Alphons said the Ministry has set a target of doubling tourist footfalls in the country by next three years. �If this is done, tourism sector will flourish to a new height�, he said.

He exhorted the State Government to lease government land or provide land free of cost for setting up good hotels to promote tourism. �If the State comes up with spectacular projects, the Ministry will certainly extend all possible help�, he said.

In his speech, Governor Prof Kaptan Singh Solanki and the Chief Minister highlighted the State�s prospects in the tourism segment. The Chief Minister said the State Government is committed to promote tourism in a big way to crate job opportunities in the State. Deb urged the people involved in the tourism sector to come up with proposals to set up hotels or lodges.

Reshmi Verma, Secretary of Tourism Ministry informed that the Ministry has been spending more fund for the NE than the upper ceiling of 10 per cent of the Ministry�s budgetary outlay.

Foreign tourist arrivals to the NE has increased by 15.74 per cent while domestic tourists have grown by 22.84 per cent. And, Tripura has topped the foreign tourist arrival among the eight NE States.
