7,80,834 litres of liquor seized in one month

GUWAHATI, April 2 - More than 7,80,834 litres of liquor were seized in the last one month during raids conducted by various agencies including the Excise department and the police.

As per the statistics of the Excise department, as many as 2,650 persons were arrested between March 4 and March 31 across the State for being in possession of illicit liquor or dealing in trade contrary to the stipulated Excise rules. A total of 1,368 raids were conducted during the period and 2,844 prohibition cases were reported.

According to records available with the Excise department, 7,691 litres of Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL), 6836.28 litres of country spirit and 59688.23 litres of distilled liquor were recovered,

As part of the intensified operation in the wake of the ensuing polls, a team led by Pranjal Bora, Joint Commissioner of Excise and nodal officer of the State liquor monitoring team, Assam, has been constantly keeping tabs on such illegal activities and flow of liquor consignments.

Commissioner of Excise Shamser Singh is also keeping strict vigil along the border areas and closely monitoring inter-State trade, said Sailendra Pandey, Public Relations Officer, Excise department.
