70th Vana Mahotsav opened in Dima Hasao

HAFLONG, July 2 - With the rest of the country, the weeklong celebration of the 70th Vana Mahotsav was inaugurated at Sibraipur near Kalachand, 15 kilometres from Maibang, in Dima Hasao district on Monday.

The inaugural function was attended by Samuel Changsan, executive member (EM), NC Hills Autonomous Council (NCHAC) as chief guest while Nandita Gorlosa, EM, Golonjo Thaosen, EM, Nojit Kemprai, MAC, Ratan Jarambusa, MAC, Monjit Naiding, MAC, Bijit Langthasa, MAC, Padmanav Baruah, SDPO took part in the programme as the guests of honour.

Chief Conservator of Forest M Tungnung, DFOs Ramen Das, N Jeme and Tunu Langthasa along with other forest officials were also present in the function.

The day started with the ceremonial plantation of saplings by guests, invitees and dignitaries, and as many as 15 gaonburhas from surrounding villages. This was followed by distribution of saplings among the villagers.�

In this connection, a well-attended public meeting was held wherein all the speakers stressed on the importance of conservation of forest and water.

Chief guest Changsan, in his speech, put stress on the importance of conservation of trees and water.

He also appealed to all the departments to come forward for this noble cause.

Changsan mentioned that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the NCHAC are committed to betterment of the society while expressing concern over the depletion of forest, thereby causing water scarcity.

Earlier, CCF Tungnung while welcoming the guests and other dignitaries explained the aims and objectives of the celebration of Vana Mahotsav and urged people to come forward in this great mission with the rest of the country.
