70 pc turnout in 2nd phase of Panchayat poll

GUWAHATI, Feb 6 � The second phase of the Panchayat elections that was conducted across eight districts of the State today recorded a voter turnout of 70 per cent (as on 5 pm).

The percentage is likely to go up, as the final report would be compiled tomorrow.

Sources in the State Election Commission said that would be re-poll in at least six polling centres in view of anomalies in ballot paper printing and some untoward incidents. Overall, the polls were peaceful.

�As per preliminary reports, the voting percentage is around 70 per cent but it is likely to go up as we are still receiving reports from different polling centres. Re-poll would be held at four centres at Tezpur and two at Nalbari as per preliminary reports,� a State Election Commission official said.

The total number of voters for the second phase was 30,40,972 in the districts of Sonitpur, Darrang, Nalbari, Barpeta, Bongaigaon, Kamrup (Metro), and parts of Dibrugarh and Morigaon.

There were 6,699 polling stations during the second phase of the Panchayat

elections.

A total of 26,724 candidates are in fray for the second phase of the Panchayat election, out of which 520 are contesting for Zila Parishad, 2,265 for the Anchalik Panchayat, 2,726 for the Gaon Panchayat presidents and 21,213 for Gaon Panchayat members.

In the first phase, the Panchayat polls were conducted in 164 Zila Parishad constituencies, 861 Anchalik Panchayat constituencies, 861 Gaon Panchayat president constituencies, and 8,610 ward member constituencies.
