GUWAHATI, May 28 - As many as seven out of the nine BJP winners from Assam of the just-concluded Lok Sabha polls managed to secure over 50 per cent of the total votes polled in their respective constituencies.
While the BJP�s winning candidate in Dibrugarh constituency secured 64.94 per cent of the total votes cast by the electorate of the seat, the party�s vote share in the Autonomous District (Diphu) constituency stood at 61.73 per cent.
Similarly, the BJP candidates secured 60.49 per cent vote share in Lakhimpur constituency, 57.48 per cent in Tezpur, 57.20 per cent in Guwahati, 52.59 per cent in Silchar and 51.35 per cent in Jorhat seat.
BJP won the Mangaldoi constituency by securing 48.83 per cent of the total votes polled in the seat, while its vote share in Karimganj was 44.62 per cent.
Even in Nagaon, which the BJP lost to the Congress by a narrow margin, the candidate of the ruling party clocked a vote share of 48.41 per cent.
Meanwhile, the principal opposition party Congress was able to secure over 50 per cent vote share in one out of the three seats which it managed to win in the State.
In Kaliabor, the party�s winning candidate received 55.18 per cent of the total votes polled. The vote share of the Congress party stood at 49.53 per cent in Nagaon and 44.23 per cent in Barpeta.
The AIUDF won the Dhubri seat with a vote share of 42.66 per cent, while in Kokrajhar the independent winner secured 32.75 per cent of the total votes polled in the constituency.
Overall, the ruling NDA secured 46.76 per cent of the total votes cast by the electorate of the State in the Lok Sabha polls. Among the constituents of the ruling front, senior partner BJP secured 36.05 per cent of the total votes polled, while the AGP and the BPF secured 8.23 per cent and 2.48 per cent vote share respectively.
Among the opposition parties, the state-wide vote share of the Congress was 35.44 per cent and that of the AIUDF stood at 7.80 per cent.
Even though the Congress could register win in only three constituencies in the just-concluded elections, the same as in 2014, the party�s total vote share saw a good increase compared to the figure of 29.90 per cent recorded by it in the previous Lok Sabha polls.
On the other hand, the AIUDF�s vote share fell quite a bit from the 14.98 per cent figure registered by the party in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections.
�Our vote share has gone up because a huge chunk of traditional AIUDF supporters deserted that party and switched over to us this time. In addition, while the ruling front contested the polls jointly, we fielded candidates in all 14 seats. So our votes were spread out across the State. But it also means that we have regained quite a bit of ground in these elections and going ahead it will help us during the 2021 Assembly polls,� said Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) general secretary Apurba Bhattacharya.
Among the NDA allies, AGP�s vote share this time has jumped to more than double compared to the figure of 3.87 per cent clocked by the party in 2014. The BPF has also shown some marginal improvement from the 2.21 per cent vote share it received in the previous polls. BJP�s own number in the 2014 Lok Sabha polls was 36.86 per cent, when it had contested the elections on its own and without any alliance.
�This time we contested only 10 out of the 14 Lok Sabha seats and won most of those constituencies with a huge margin. So, our party�s performance has improved considerably if you compare the figures in the 10 seats where we fielded candidates this time with the numbers from 2014. And taking the NDA as a whole, our performance in these polls has been incredible. Besides, the voter turnout this time was at a record high,� said State BJP spokesperson Rupam Goswami.
He added, �The growth in the share of the Congress is due to the fact that most of the AIUDF votes have shifted to it. The fall in the vote base of the AIUDF is commensurate with the increase in that of the Congress.�
