7 houses torched, curfew clamped at Chokihola

DIPHU, Dec 28 � Seven houses belonging to Rengma people were torched by unidentified miscreants last night in a village, located 3 km away from the Chokihola Police Station. Curfew was imposed by the Karbi Anglong administration today for an indefinite period in the disturbed area at Chokihola.

Several hundreds of people are taking shelter in relief camps after leaving their respective villages. Three relief camps have already been set up by the administration at Chokihola, Silonijan and Santipur. According to official sources, more than 400 Rengma Naga people have been taking shelter at the Chokihola LP School and the Barpathar High School under the Santipur Police Station since yesterday.

On the other hand, 150 Karbi people are in a relief camp set up at the Silonijan Sardoka Engti LP School. In order to bring the situation under control, security forces and paramilitary forces have been deployed in the violence-prone areas.

According to reports received here, seven houses at the Rengma-dominated village, including one belonging to a Karbi family, were torched. No casualty was reported during the incident, police sources said.

State HAD Minister Kharsing Engti, along with Klengdoon Engti, MLA, Tuliram Ronghang, CEM, KAAC and other KAAC EMs visited the violence-hit areas today and met the displaced people at the relief camps.

State HAD Minister Engti said that he was in constant touch with the Chief Minister on the matter, and that additional forces have been sought to restore normalcy. Necessary relief materials, including clothes, have been distributed at the relief camps.
