HAFLONG, July 9 - Acting on a tip-off, Langting Police apprehended four members of a gang involved in extortion activities in and around the Lanting area on Tuesday.

Those held are Sanjay Das (17), Gnir Khelma (20) of Kalibari area, Farukh Laskar (16) and Dipankor Das (16) of Langting Gosh Patti area. Police also recovered a toy rifle and four handmade guns from them. A case (No. 37 dated July 7, 2015) was registered and forwarded to Haflong.

In another incident, personnel of the 43rd Assam Rifles nabbed two drug peddlers and an user from the Roshni Homeo Clinic near Moulhoi auto stand. They were handed over to the Haflong Police Station on Tuesday.

The apprehended peddlers were identified as Waziur Hussain and Paothang Lienthang and the drug user is Joseph L Konwar. Huge quantities of capsules, tablets, cough syrup and other drug items were also recovered from them by the Assam Rifle jawans.

Meanwhile, Dima Hasao Deputy Commissioner Juri Phukan visited the Langting Police Station to take the stock of the situation on Wednesday.

Talking to this correspondent, the Deputy Commissioner said that the district administration would not tolerate the activities of miscreants involved in disturbing the peace and tranquillity of the district and stern action against them would be taken. She further appealed to the people of Langting in particular and Dima Hasao in general to remain alert against antisocial activities and extend their cooperation to curb them.
