GUWAHATI, July 25 - Seven persons have been arrested by police for trying to withdraw Rs 1 crore from a bank using forged cheques.
Panbazar police had registered a case following a complaint lodged by Ajanta Hazarika, AGM, SBI, Panbazar after two forged cheques were detected. The cheques were purportedly issued by an executive engineer of World Bank division of PWD and the money was to be transferred to the account of one Pabitra Sarma.
The main accused Deepjyoti Sarma was arrested when he had come to the bank to withdraw the money. He is a resident of Patacharkuchi in Barpeta.
Later, six more persons were arrested � Dr Ambarish Gorait (Namrup), Ashiman Handique (Dibrugarh ), Chandan Deka of Hengerabari, Joon Das (Dibrugarh), Wilson Barik (Tinsukia) and Chirantan Das of Hengerabari. Police said more persons were associated with the gang and hunt is on to nab them.
