7-day police custody for APS officer, 2 others

GUWAHATI, July 23 - Assam Police Service (APS) officer Kabita Das along with two other �middlemen� � Surajit Choudhury and Sailen Sarma Baruah � was today produced before the Court of Special Judge, Assam, which remanded them to seven-day police custody.

Additional Public Prosecutors Nayan Das and Pranab Das had sought 14-day police custody.

While Das was arrested late last night from Duliajan, Surajit Choudhury and Sailen Sarma Baruah were arrested early this morning from Guwahati and Mangaldai areas respectively in connection with the cash-for-job scam. The crackdown was supervised by investigating officer Surjeet Singh Panesar and additional investigating officer Subhasish Baruah.

Surajit Choudhury, according to sources, is a real estate businessman, while Sailen Sarma Baruah is an advocate and a district vice president of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party in Darrang.

Choudhury�s wife Pallabi Sarma Choudhury, an Assam Civil Service (ACS) officer, has already been arrested by the Dibrugarh Police.

Sources also divulged that both Choudhury and Sarma also made unsuccessful attempts to influence the investigation.
