By Staff reporter

GUWAHATI, June 15 Bhaswati Deka of St Marys English High School (Maligaon), Stuty Khound of Shankardev Shishu Bidya Niketan (Biswanath Charilai), and Gyandeep Sarma of Shankardev Shishu Bidya Niketan (Bokakhat) jointly topped the list of successful candidates in the High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) Examination-2012, the results of which were declared today.

They secured an identical aggregate of 569 marks out of a total of 600.

Shahinoor Rahman of Bijni Bandhab HS School, Bijni, and Parijat Priyadarshini of St Josephs Convent High School, Tezpur, shared the second position, with 567 marks each.

Priyanka Bezbaruah of Udayan Santi Niketan, Bezera, was third, compiling an aggregate of 566 marks.

The results recorded an overall pass percentage of 69.63 marginally lower than that of last year at 70.38 pc with boy students (72.47 pc) outshining girls (66.85 pc). In 2010, the pass percentage was 63.21.

Of the total 2,78,704 students, 26,203 secured first division, followed by 68,180 in second division and 99,684 in third division. The total number of students who passed stood at 1,94,067, while 84,637 could not clear the exam.

The top ten positions were shared by as many as 41 students. The positions showed a wider representation from across the State, with Shankardev Shishu Bidya Niketan accounting for 11 rank-holders. As has been the trend, private schools dominated the results, with government-run educational institutions cutting a sorry figure. Results from small towns and mofussil areas were encouraging both in terms of toppers and overall performance.

From Guwahati, St Marys English High School (Maligaon) and Assam Jatiya Bidyalay (Noonmati) had two rank-holders each. Holy Child HS School (Chandmari), St Marys HS School (Chenikuthi), and Happy Child High School (Rehabari) had one topper each.

A district-wise analysis reveals Nalbari as the best overall performer with a pass percentage of 82.21, followed by Dhemaji with 80.32 pc, Jorhat with 78.83 pc, Kamrup with 78.44 pc, and Lakhimpur with 77.86 pc.

Chirang with 54.50 pc, Cachar with 54.72 pc, NC Hills with 56.17 pc, Tinsukia with 58.43 pc, Kokrajhar with 58.96 pc, and Karbi Anglong with 59.68 were among those faring poorly.

The All Assam Students Union (AASU), the Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba-Chatra Parishad (AJYCP), the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and a host of organizations congratulated the successful students, including the toppers, and urged them to devote themselves to nation-building after concluding their higher education.

The AASU will be staging a special felicitation programme for the rank-holders at the Ravindra Bhawan on June 26.

Our Bokakhat Correspondent adds:

A festive atmosphere gripped Bokakhat after local lad Gyandeep Sarma of Shankardev Shishu Bidya Niketan emerged a joint first in the merit list. Teachers, students, guardians and the public congratulated the topper at a meeting in presence of Pradhan Acharyya of the school, Protap Phukan.

In an informal chat with mediapersons, Gyandeep expressed his gratitude to God, parents, teachers and well-wishers for his success.

In a departure from convention, Gyandeep said he wanted to become a politician or a social worker rather than an engineer, doctor, or government officer. He said that rather than allowing the already corrupt political system to degenerate further, the good people, especially students, had a role in cleansing the corrupt political system.

Parents of Gyandeep Dwijen Sarma and Minakshi Bhagawati Sarma both teachers expressed gratitude to the staff for the outstanding performance of their son.

Gyandeep expressed his desire to get admitted in the science stream of either Cotton College or JB College.

Gyandeep was later felicitated by Jitu Sarma Rajkhowa, Swapan Nath, Dhruba Jyoti Saha and Achyut Hazarika on behalf of the media circle of Bokakhat.

Our Biswanath Chariali Correspondent adds: Three students including two girls brought glory to the historical temple town, Biswanath Chariali by securing three top positions in the HSLC and HM examinations. Among them, Stuty Khound of Shankerdev Shishu Vidya Niketan came first by securing 569 marks. She scored 88 in Assamese (MIL), 93 in English, 98 in General Mathematics, 96 in General Science, 94 in Social Science and 100 in Advance Mathematics.

Talking exclusively to The Assam Tribune, Stuty disclosed that she studied from 12 to 13 hours daily to prepare for the exam. Though she had expected a position among top 10, she did not think that she would come first. She had no routine for study and took private tuition in English, General Science and Advance Mathematics. She was fully inspired by the Acharyas of her school, parents, relatives and the tutors.

Daughter of Bipul Khound, lecturer at DIET, Biswanath Chariali and Manju Khound, a housewife, Stuty plans to take admission in HS (Science) in Biswanath College, here and then, go for engineering. She feels that medium can never be a hamper in pursuing studies and perseverance, patience, hard labour and respect to teachers are the key to success in life. Former President, APJ Abdul Kalam is her ideal person.

On the other hand, Md Imran Hussein of Fakaruddin Ali Ahmed High Madrasa of Soaguri, Biswanathghat stood 3rd in the High Madrassa Examination. Son of Md Muzammil Haque and Imana Khatun of Chotepam Baghmari, Imran secured 47(out of 50) in Assamese, 88 in Arabic, 91 in G Sc, 86 in SS, 66 in G Maths and 34(out of 50) in Arabic Fiqah.
