66.97 pc polling in Dhemaji

By Correspondent

SILAPATHAR, April 9 - Polling in the Dhemaji bye-election today passed off peacefully amidst a low voter turnout, with the percentage of 66.97 being much less than last years Assembly election that marked a healthy 80.65 percent polling.

The voters seemed to be fed up with polling after being forced to come out to vote three times in the past one year twice for electing an MLA and once for an MP.

The polling that started at 7 am ended at 4 pm. The counting will be held on April 13.

The fate of five candidates hangs in balance in this bypoll, including Dr Ranoj Pegu of the BJP, Babul Sonowal of the Congress and CPM candidate Jadu Hazarika.

Polling was briefly disrupted after four VVPAT machines and an EVM machine malfunctioned, but they were replaced in time.
