60 pc votes cast in GHADC polls

SHILLONG, Oct 12 - Nearly 60 per cent of the 5,90,456 voters today turned up in the Garo Hills region in Meghalaya to exercise their franchise and elect members to the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council, officials said.

�The poll turnout was nearly 60 per cent till 4 pm when most of the polling came to end,� District Council Affairs Commissioner and Secretary Jopthiaw Lyngdoh said.

The final polling figure would be arrived at only after information from remote polling stations are collected later in the evening, he said.

Although polling started off on a brisk note in the morning, it picked up slowly throughout the day despite a poll boycott announced by the pressure groups and a militant outfit.

The polling remained by and large peaceful and there are no reports of any untoward incident, a senior police officer, who is overseeing the conduct of the poll, said. As many as 162 candidates are in fray for the 29 seats. � PTI
