60-hr bandh begins in Manipur

IMPHAL, July 21 � A 60- hour general strike which began at 5 am today in Manipur has partially affected the inter-district vehicle movement. The bandh call was given by the Joint Action Committee (JAC) against the abduction of contractor Irungbam Irabanta.

However, business activities in the State capital was normal with all shops and other establishments remaining open as usual.

Contractor Irabanta is alleged to have been abducted by NSCN-IM on May 27 last, but the Naga rebel group has rejected the allegation. JAC convenor H Shila alleged that Irabanta went missing on May 27 after he went to Ukhrul to meet the NSCN-IM functionaries. He was abducted and his whereabouts remain unknown, he said.

Irabanta is a contractor supplying stones and sand for construction of Maphou Dam, a multi purpose project.
