6 held on blackmailing charges

GUWAHATI, May 23 � Six members of a �honey trapping� racket including four women were arrested by city police last night on charges of blackmailing a Guwahati-based government engineer.

The gang had demanded Rs 5 lakh from the engineer, of which Rs 1 lakh was already realised.

Police said the episode of honey trapping started a few weeks back when the engineer was lured to a flat located in Uzan Bazar where some photographs of him in compromising positions were clicked.

Later, the gang started blackmailing the engineer and threatened to make the pictures public, they also allegedly involved members of the media, which is being investigated.

Those arrested have been identified as Megha Ojha, Pinky Bora, Malabika Bora, Nandini Guha, Pranab Deka and Jagannath Shah. Of the arrested, two of the women are said to be part-time actors.

Those who introduced themselves as media persons are yet to be apprehended, police said.

City police also arrested seven members of a gang of dacoits from Kahilipara area and seized weapons, including a 9 mm pistol.
