6 Assam Rifles men killed in Manipur ambush

IMPHAL, May 22 - Six Assam Rifles personnel were killed in an ambush by suspected armed militants near a remote village of Manipur�s Chandel district, sources here said.

The incident took place on the New Samtal Road near Hengshi village, about 140 km south of here, under Molcham police station, when a team of 29 Assam Rifles was returning to their Joupi battalion in Chandel district after inspecting a landslide area around 12:45 pm, the sources said. Six weapons were also reportedly taken away by the attackers.

The area has been cordoned off and a search operation is going on. No armed group has claimed responsibility for the ambush till the filing of this report.

PTI adds from New Delhi: Home Minister Rajnath Singh today directed security forces to take �strongest possible action� against militants involved in the killing six Assam Rifles personnel in Manipur.

Singh reviewed the situation with Union Home Secretary Rajiv Mehrishi and other top officials in the security establishment following the killing of a junior commissioned officer and five jawans of Assam Rifles in an ambush in Manipur�s Chandel district close to Indo-Myanmar border, official sources said.

The Home Minister also spoke to Assam Rifles Director General, who apprised him of the situation and action taken so far. Singh expressed sadness over the incident.

Last year, 18 army personnel were killed in the same district in an ambush by the NSCN(K) militants.
