57 file nominations for Jorhat civic polls

JORHAT, Jan 29 � A total of 57 candidates from different political parties have filed nomination papers for contesting the Jorhat Municipal Board�s elections scheduled to be held on February 9.

According to the poll officials, the BJP and the Congress have filed nominations for contesting in all the 19 seats, while the AGP and the CPI(M) have filed papers for nine and one seats respectively for the municipal board elections. Nine independent candidates have also filed their nomination papers for the polls.

While the CPI(M) has offered candidature for the ward No. 1, the AGP will contest in the ward numbers 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 14, 15, 16 and 19. The independent candidates have filed their papers for ward numbers 3, 7, 8, 10, 11, 14, 16, 18 and 19.

Officials said that a list of valid candidature would be published on January 30 and the date of withdrawal of candidature has been fixed on February 2. The counting of votes will take place on February 12.

Meanwhile, for the ten seats in Dergaon Town Committee, 46 candidates have filed their nominations of which 17 are independent candidates. The BJP and the Congress will contest all the ten seats, while the AGP has fielded candidates in nine seats.
